CANAL BASIN REDEVELOPMENT TO BE PART OF SLOUGH URBAN RENEWAL

Slough Borough Council cabinet is set to approve a proposal for Slough Urban Renewal (SUR) to take forward a major redevelopment of Slough canal basin, Stoke Road.

SUR – a 50:50 joint venture between Slough Borough Council and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd – has been working on proposals for the site and cabinet are now being asked to formally approve them having an option on the land.

Initial proposals for the basin redevelopment include housing, landscaping and work to make the basin a destination, for boaters and canal lovers alike.

Plans being developed by SUR include working in partnership with Waterside Places to deliver a comprehensive redevelopment of the end of the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal.

Initial artists’ impressions on what the new canal-side development could look like were put on display at the council’s annual canal festival last month (September).

Regenerating a real asset to the town

Councillor Zaffar Ajaib, commissioner for housing and urban renewal, said: “For too long our beautiful canal has been hidden from view and the basin neglected and ignored.

“By giving SUR an option on the land, they can take forward their amazing proposals for the area and we can regenerate what is a real asset to the town.”

He added: “For many years our aspiration has been to turn the canal basin into something usable and attractive and with the SUR proposals we can do this. I will be recommending this to cabinet.”

Andy Howell, general manager of SUR, said: “Working with Waterside Places we hope to transform this location by providing a range of high quality homes set within large open spaces and public areas.

“Our proposals will create a community and improve access to the waterway to encourage new activity in this area.”
