Slough Borough Council’s building control team swept the boards at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) building excellence awards as they won in all three of their nominated categories.

The Curve, the council’s iconic flagship library and cultural centre was named ‘Best public service building’ at the central region awards ceremony, held at the Doubletree Hilton in Milton Keynes on Friday (5 May) night.

The £22million cultural hub houses Slough’s new central library, community learning rooms, the registrar services including a wedding room, a 280-seater performance and multi-use space, café and garden area.

The Curve is one of a series of projects delivered by Slough Urban Renewal (SUR) – a groundbreaking 50:50 partnership between the council and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd, delivering major community benefits including new housing, leisure facilities and schools.

Dharmesh Modi from Morgan Sindall took home the ‘LABC non-residential site agent of the year’ award for his role on the project.

Bidvest Food Service completed an evening of wins being awarded ‘Highly commended – best large commercial building.’

Regional winners in each category have been automatically shortlisted for the LABC national awards which are being held in London on Friday 10 November.

Councillor Zaffar Ajaib, commissioner for housing and urban renewal, said: “We are absolutely delighted The Curve has been recognised as the best public service building in the region.

“The Curve has transformed the town centre of Slough and has triggered further regeneration as well as providing fantastic services for the community in a truly state of the art facility.”

Andy Howell, SUR general manager added: “The SUR team is delighted that this truly impressive and ultramodern building is providing a great space for the community and local business. We look forward to it featuring in the national awards in November.”
